Last night, Chad and I went out and got some Yogos. Frozen yogurt priced by weight with as many toppings as you want? Sign me up.
We discussed details for our trip to Windsor this weekend. Maybe I'll post a few things about that too.

Long Time Away
I've been gone for too long!
I've missed some big holidays, and that's a bit of a bummer, but I'm really not too disappointed. I've done a lot of thinking about this project, and about all the ways I could make it bigger and better. More exciting to read. More fun for everyone involved from me, the content provider, to the people who help me pull off these celebratory stunts, to you, the reader and consumer who doesn't care about my unhealthy obsession with comics books and rich foods.
Celebrate With Jake is supposed to be about finding the little things in life to celebrate. As the title page says, there's something to celebrate each day, no matter what's going on. I think I was focusing too much on trying to find reasons to celebrate instead of just looking for what was right there in front of me. If you read back a few posts to the one I wrote about Jim Henson, you'll see what I mean. It wasn't a holiday, or a special day, or a day someone on the internet decided to make into a day where you eat peas from the edge of a knife. It was just the birthday of a guy that I have a lot of respect for, and I wanted to share that with my readers.
Living your life... and I mean really living it, cannot happen in the past. We can't change what has already happened, and we can't fully predict everything the future will bring to us. Success and failure come to us in waves and to be happy with your life, to really understand that you're okay and be content with just being... you have to live in the now. In the present. I want to be able to stand up out of bed every day and look out with clear eyes, because whatever that day is going to bring to me, I'm going to rise to meet it.
I want to share that with my readers. I want to share with you my positive experiences and all the wacky stuff I get up to. I want to plan these posts and deliver content that is entertaining and thought provoking. And I want to enjoy doing it.
So with that, this blog is changing direction. Expect to see more of me soon. There's some projects I've been meaning to get to, and hopefully, they'll be just as exciting as I think they will.
See you soon, and stay awesome.

No Beard Day
This was a tough one for me... remember a few months ago when I was growing my beard in for the winter?
Yeah, then this day comes along.
In all honesty, I'm starting a new job and wanted to look clean cut (and maybe a tad younger...) for the first day, which is tomorrow. So really, shaving the beard off wasn't all bad.
Still, I like my beard. I usually have one from September through May or even
June. I only shave in the summer because it gets too hot. The beard keeps my face warm throughout the long, cold Michigan winters, and frankly, I like the way it looks a lot better. Also, I'm too lazy to shave most of the time.
So I set about gathering all the things I would need. Shaving cream, razor, aftershave, and a whole pile of determination.
I don't like my aftershave. It's Old Spice, and while I thought it smelled good when I bought it last year, I've since come to the conclusion that it makes me smell like an old college professor who never has a date because he's, "married to his work."
Whatever that means.
I slapped on some shave gel, which is a bit of a process when you have a beard that you're taking off exclusively with a razor.
After the whole face was covered, I made sure my neck was done too, then washed off my hands. You don't want hands covered in shaving cream when you're trying to handle a razor.
Nothing left to do from there but start shaving. So I did.
I discovered after finishing the right side that this was going to take too long. I washed off the shaving cream, busted out my beard trimmer and hacked that sucker away. Then I put the shaving cream BACK on, and shaved what was left away.
I ended up not using my aftershave. I used my cologne instead, which is Eau Fraiche, by Gianni Versace. Much better smelling on me, and achieves pretty much the same effect.

Look at that handsome devil! |

Okay Jake, you can do this. It's just a beard. You can always grow it back... |
Smells like desperation! |
Whatever that means.
The tools of beard removal. Yes, that Edge Gel is for sensitive skin. What? I can't be sensitive? |
I slapped on some shave gel, which is a bit of a process when you have a beard that you're taking off exclusively with a razor.
This apparently takes a lot of concentration. |
After the whole face was covered, I made sure my neck was done too, then washed off my hands. You don't want hands covered in shaving cream when you're trying to handle a razor.
I'm pretty sure I saw the face of Jesus in the shaving cream on my left hand... |
Nothing left to do from there but start shaving. So I did.
Never has two months of hard work literally gone down the drain so quickly. |
I discovered after finishing the right side that this was going to take too long. I washed off the shaving cream, busted out my beard trimmer and hacked that sucker away. Then I put the shaving cream BACK on, and shaved what was left away.
Should have thought of that in the first place.
I wasn't long before my face was smooth and... well, it was smooth. You could see a lot more of it though, and that's usually not a good thing with me. Oh, okay, I'm not a totally ugly dude, but I still like the way I look with the beard better than not. However, sacrifices must be made in the name of bloggitude sometimes!
Shaving turns me into a smarmy jerk-face, obviously. |
I ended up not using my aftershave. I used my cologne instead, which is Eau Fraiche, by Gianni Versace. Much better smelling on me, and achieves pretty much the same effect.
Big thanks to Lauren for coming out to take pictures for me. Stay tuned for more! I've got another post in the works, and I'm planning more for later this month... you didn't think I'd let Halloween go by without a post, did you?
See you next time!

John Lennon's Birthday
On this day in 1940, the world gained a great man. You can google John and find out more about him in less than a minute than I can type here in ten, so I'll let you do that if you don't know who he is. Like anyone reading this blog doesn't know who John Lennon is. Sheesh.
Anyway, this post is less about describing how I'm going to celebrate a holiday of some sort, and more of an excuse to post a few Beatles songs. :)
Enjoy!

Jim Henson's Birthday
Today's post is not about a National holiday... not even a fake internet one. Or one invented by Halmark or even one of those random 'appreciation' days you see every now and then. No, today is about celebrating the birthday of one of the most amazing men the 20th Century had to offer.
Jim Henson (wiki!) is best known as the creator of the Muppets and the voice and the hand behind Kermit the Frog. His contributions to modern pop culture and the influence he had on several generations of children are undeniable. His work and his creations have endured since their inceptions, and nothing to think of the scope of his legacy is staggering.
As an example of his status as legendary in the TV and film making industry, it's appropriate to point out the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are three people who are double credited there; Walt Disney as himself and Micky Mouse, Mel Blanc as himself and Bugs Bunny... and Jim Henson, as himself and Kermit. That's some pretty big company to keep.
To say he effected a major influence on my life is an understatement. I grew up with Sesame Street, which in turn spawned the Muppet Show, which in my opinion is still the best verity show ever aired on television. A list of my personal heroes includes The Great Gonzo... towards the top. Fraggle Rock was one of my favorite shows as a child, and I've every recent Muppet movie in the theater on opening weekend.
At Henson's memorial service, no one wore black, as per his request. The grievers were given butterflies on puppeteer's rods to wave, and there were more musical numbers than you' expect to see at a funeral. I'll leave you here with two videos in Mr. Henson's honor.
We all still miss you Jim, but we know you're smiling on us from somewhere, watching over all of our Muppet needs. Thank you.
Some of Jim's favorite songs, as preformed by his friends...
And the memorial given by the guy who worked with and knew Jim better than almost anyone... Frank Oz.
See you all next time!

National Cheeseburger Day
I was totally going to do a big thing with cheeseburgers and eating them and cooking them and generally being awesome today. I really was.
Thing is, every Monday I get together with some buddies out Main Street Pub on West Main Street, and we partake of their burger baskets and have a jolly old time goofing around on Monday evening after work. So I really don't feel like eating or cooking another cheeseburger today.
Instead, I'm having a turkey club for dinner. It has bacon on it, and it is delicious.
See you tomorrow for the biggest holiday in all of September!
